You Can’t Be The Only One, Right?

You’re right; you can’t be the only one.

I mean, you are the only one who has your child and your unique experience, but there are others you can share with, those who will understand.

So, find your community.

Just how do you find your community? That’s the tricky part. In our experience, community is made up of people who also have kids with complex needs. Others work with kids who have complex needs. Still others, have no idea what you’re talking about, but they want to be there to support you as best they can. You need a variety of people in your life to help as you navigate these complex needs.

But where specifically do you find them?

First, consider those around you, those in your family, your neighbours, your friends at school, those who participate in extracurricular activities and in community groups you attend, etc. Can you find someone you click with, someone who will share this journey with you, someone who will listen when you’ve had a bad day or hear your frustration and talk it out with you? They may not always offer the best advice, but they will be willing to be there for you. This is the beginning of your community, those who may become part of the self-care team that will support you while you help your child.

Second, use social media to your advantage. We all doom scroll after a hard day or a mind-boggling argument about the wrong granola bar we picked up from the grocery store or after yet another tough conversation with the principal. We’ve all been there. Why not use social media to find more people who you can learn from? Look for groups that discuss the same—or similar—complex needs as your child has, a group you can learn tips and tricks from. Participation can give you the opportunity to discuss your situation and learn from others who have gone through the same thing. Social media is full of all kinds of information. So, use it to your advantage and find those groups that will expand your community.

Third, reach out to your local social service agencies. Here in Ontario, each county has social agencies that help families navigate mental health, physical health, and complex needs (i.e. Autism, FASD, ADHD, and others). Not sure where to find all that info? You can go to EveryKidROX.com and check out the Information for Caregivers section to find out where you can find local social service agencies that can help get you the information you’re looking for. You can also check in with your local YMCA or YWCA for help as well. In most areas, these organizations are connected to all the social agencies.

Every Kid ROX is here to help you.

Remember, you are not alone on your journey of supporting your loved one with complex needs. There are whole communities of people that are looking for people like you to add to their community. If you need help getting started, check out our website or email hello@everykidrox.com. We hope to connect soon.

You got this!
